Freediver ascending through deep blue water

Can you beat 3:45?

I've become fascinated with freediving — the practice of calming your mind and body completely to dive on a single breath. My current breath hold is 3:45. My deepest dive is 90 feet. Both took months of deliberate practice to achieve.

The surprising part: anyone can access a version of this. Your body already knows how.

The mammalian dive reflex

There's a primal survival mode still wired into your body. When you hold your breath and relax, it activates — slowing your heart rate, redistributing blood to vital organs, and helping your body use oxygen more efficiently. Freedivers train it deliberately. You're about to feel it for yourself.
